The mkstaboot -f option now produces upgradable station images.

If you need to create a non-upgradable image, -F will do that.
(For example, because upgradable's do not yet fit on 32M cards).

An upgradable node can be upgraded by any computer running an ssh
daemon that can connect to the node.

Log into the node and run the script:

/sbin/upgrade user@host:/path/to/upgrade.tgz
